Currituck County Board of Commissioners Special Meeting
The discussion focused on the proposed 2026 Sales Tax Referendum. The board evaluated the potential revenue generation of the sales tax increase, its impact on the existing tax rate, and the specific categories of purchases that would be subject to the tax versus those that are exempt. The primary motivation for the referendum is to diversify revenue streams to fund critical infrastructure projects and public safety needs, including fire equipment, ambulance replacements, and water and wastewater system improvements, thereby reducing the burden on property taxes. The board also addressed concerns regarding the necessity of the tax increase, comparing it to potential future property tax hikes, and emphasized the role of commercial expansion in mitigating school overcrowding.
